EDIT: Laird Andy McBratlie takes by correctly identifying the Morane-Saulnier M.S.406.
The 406 was a French fighter used in the early stages of WWII. While it was a solid aircraft, it could not compete with the German Bf 109 and subsequently saw significant losses.
